Our map reading and mountain navigation weekend is a course designed to give you the confidence to walk and hike the mountains safely, using a map and compass – even when the mists come down.
Mountain navigation in Snowdonia
An experienced mountain guide will introduce you to the skills of map reading and route finding out in the North Wales hills. We aim to make the course as enjoyable as it is instructional, the style is informal and the classrooms are the beautiful hills and mountains of Snowdonia.
The course is open to complete beginners, those who want to brush up rusty map reading skills and to the more experienced who might want a pleasant walk in the hills with some navigation practice thrown in.
Map reading and navigation
Using
1:25,000 maps, the course will place particular emphasis on contour interpretation,
taking and walking on a compass bearing, using timing and pacing to estimate
distance, and developing strategies to apply these skills appropriately.
